5 Things to Check Before Renting an Apartment in Nigeria

Before you commit to a rental, run through this checklist.

1. Verify who you are dealing with. Confirm the landlord or agent is genuine and ask to see proof that they are entitled to let the property.
2. Inspect in person. Check water supply, power, drainage, security, signs of flooding and the condition of doors, windows and fittings.
3. Understand the full cost. Ask for the rent, agency and legal fees, caution deposit and any service charge in writing.
4. Get a written tenancy agreement and read it before you sign or pay.
5. Check the neighbourhood. Visit at different times of day and test the commute to work or school.
